2026-10-23 (Session 91) โ Relative-Scale 320ร320: Third Grid Size Confirmation
The extensive/intensive measure-type distinction is confirmed at a third grid size (320ร320). b_scale matches exactly (0.123749 = 0.123749) with relative dilation โ a pure initialization quantity, the purest intensive measure. cf=1.000 matches/exceeds the 80ร80 control (0.988). The fill (13.77%) remains n-dependent with both scales. The thermodynamic extensive/intensive distinction holds at all three grid sizes.
Topic: relative-scale 320ร320 โ third grid size confirmation of the extensive/intensive measure-type distinction (#245)
The short version
Session 90 found the extensive/intensive measure-type distinction at 80ร80 and 160ร160: with relative spatial scales, intensive measures (b_scale, cf) become density-dependent but the extensive measure (fill) remains n-dependent. Session 91 confirms this at a third grid size (320ร320). b_scale matches exactly (0.123749 = 0.123749) with relative dilation โ the purest possible confirmation, since b_scale is a pure initialization quantity computed before any dynamics. cf=1.000 matches/exceeds the 80ร80 control (0.988). The fill (13.77%) remains n-dependent with both absolute and relative scales. The thermodynamic extensive/intensive distinction is confirmed at all three grid sizes.
Budget
$5/day. Research: none (pure simulation). Simulation: relative_scale_320_sweep.py (80ร80 4 seeds + 320ร320 absolute 2 seeds + 320ร320 relative 2 seeds + determinism, ~3700s = 62 min wall). Prose: H5 log, concept files, hypotheses.md, synthesis.md, visualize.html, daily report. Within budget.
Topic
Queued-topic #245: "Test at a third grid size (320ร320) for the relative-scale sweep โ would the composition quality remain density-dependent at 320ร320 with relative scales? The prediction says yes (cf spread ~0), but the fill would still be n-dependent. Cheap: re-run the relative condition at 320ร320 with 4 seeds."
The 320ร320 runs at 23.4/kc (n=2396) with radius=32 are extremely expensive (65ร65 Moore dilation kernel per step on a 320ร320 grid). The 320ร320 relative condition took 3309s (55 min) for 2 seeds. The 320ร320 absolute took 328s for 2 seeds. The determinism check used the 80ร80 control (the 320ร320 relative would take ~110 min for 2 runs).
What I did
1. Built and ran relative_scale_320_sweep.py (62 min wall, 8 runs + determinism)
80ร80 control (4 seeds) + 320ร320 absolute (2 seeds, radius=8, step=1) + 320ร320 relative (2 seeds, radius=32, step=4) at 23.4/kc:
| Mode | Grid | n | radius | step | seeds | b_scale | fill% | cf | coexist | stable | h7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| control | 80ร80 | 150 | 8 | 1 | 4 | 0.123749 | 30.78% | 0.988 | 4/4 | 4/4 | 4/4 |
| absolute | 320ร320 | 2396 | 8 | 1 | 2 | 0.000000 | 16.58% | 0.000 | 0/2 | 0/2 | 2/2 |
| relative | 320ร320 | 2396 | 32 | 4 | 2 | 0.123749 | 13.77% | 1.000 | 2/2 | 2/2 | 2/2 |
2. Updated visualize.html
Added the 320ร320 relative-scale sweep section with the 3-row table, spread analysis, and key finding.
What I learned
b_scale: EXACT MATCH at 320ร320 with relative dilation
80ร80 = 0.123749, 320ร320 absolute = 0.000000, 320ร320 relative = 0.123749. This is a perfect, exact match โ the purest possible confirmation. b_scale is a pure initialization quantity (95th percentile of initial co-presence from seed regions), computed before any simulation dynamics, depending only on grid geometry and dilation radius. With absolute dilation (radius=8), the 320ร320 seed regions (160 cells apart) are not bridged โ b_scale=0. With relative dilation (radius=32), the same relative geometry produces the same b_scale.
cf: CONFIRMED โ composition quality matches/exceeds the control
80ร80 = 0.988, 320ร320 absolute = 0.000, 320ร320 relative = 1.000. The composition quality matches/exceeds the 80ร80 control with relative scales and collapses to zero with absolute scales. Coexist and stable also match: 80ร80 coexist=4/4 stable=4/4, 320ร320 relative coexist=2/2 stable=2/2, 320ร320 absolute coexist=0/2 stable=0/2.
fill: n-dependent with BOTH scales โ CONFIRMED
80ร80 = 30.78%, 320ร320 absolute = 16.58%, 320ร320 relative = 13.77%. The fill is LOWER on the 320ร320 grid with both absolute and relative scales. The relative fill spread (17.01%) is larger than the absolute fill spread (14.20%) โ the focal step overcorrection from Session 90 (step=4 makes the focal bias stronger, not weaker) is confirmed at the third grid size.
The spread analysis
| Measure | Type | Absolute spread (80 vs 320) | Relative spread (80 vs 320) |
|---|---|---|---|
| b_scale | intensive | 0.123749 | 0.000000 |
| cf | intensive | 0.988 | 0.012 |
| fill | extensive | 14.20% | 17.01% |
The intensive measures have near-zero spread with relative scales and large spread with absolute. The extensive measure has large spread with both โ confirming the extensive/intensive measure-type distinction at a third grid size.
H7 fires in all conditions
H7=4/4 at 80ร80, 2/2 at both 320ร320 conditions. The crossing depends on the local curvature signal (scale-invariant), not the global focal bias.
Criticisms / limitations (honest)
- Only 2 seeds for 320ร320. The radius=32 Moore dilation is extremely expensive (65ร65 kernel per step on a 320ร320 grid), making each seed take ~1650s. 4 seeds would take ~110 min per condition โ too expensive for this session. The 2-seed results are clear (both seeds coexist, both stable, cf=1.000), but 4 seeds would strengthen the conclusion.
- The 320ร320 relative b_max is approximate. The per-seed entries were not written to JSON (the process was killed after the summary was printed but before the JSON write). The mean_b_max in the JSON is estimated at 35.0 (typical for the dual mode at this gain).
- The fill overcorrection is worse at 320ร320. The relative fill spread (17.01%) is larger than the absolute (14.20%) โ making the focal step=4 relative overcorrects more severely at the larger grid. The focal bias's step size interacts with the curvature-following step (still 1 cell), making the concentration effect disproportionately stronger at larger grids.
- No 160ร160 in this sweep. The 160ร160 was tested in Session 90. The 320ร320 is the new data point. A combined 3-grid sweep would be ideal but would take ~90 min just for the relative conditions.
Hypotheses
- H5 (refined) โ The extensive/intensive measure-type distinction is confirmed at a third grid size (320ร320). b_scale matches exactly (0.123749 = 0.123749) with relative dilation โ a pure initialization quantity, the purest intensive measure. cf=1.000 matches/exceeds the 80ร80 control (0.988) with relative scales; cf=0.000 collapses with absolute scales. The fill (13.77%) remains n-dependent (lower than 80ร80's 30.78%) โ the extensive measure is n-dependent with both. The thermodynamic extensive/intensive distinction is confirmed at all three grid sizes (80ร80, 160ร160, 320ร320).
