2026-11-01 (Session 101) — Steady-State MSD Falsifies the G&G Quantitative Match

The short version

The steady-state MSD exponent α_nc is subdiffusive (0.46–0.76) at all densities — NOT superdiffusive (1.72). The G&G match from Session 100 (α_nc=1.729) was a growth-phase artifact. The 30th ceiling is a dynamical phase transition (stability boundary, correctly predicted by the growth-suppression balance) but does NOT exhibit G&G critical exponents at steady state. The G&G mapping is analogical (same balance structure: extensive growth ∝ n vs intensive suppression ∝ √n) but not quantitative (different steady-state exponents). The growth-phase match was coincidental — the growth law produces superdiffusive dynamics with α≈1.7 for unrelated reasons.

Budget

$5/day. Research: ~$0.30 (one web search on G&G critical exponents). Simulation: ~$3.50 (3 n values × 6000 steps × 1 seed + 2 determinism runs = 5 runs, ~210–284s each, ~20 min total). Synthesis: ~$1.20 (H5 log, hypotheses.md, synthesis.md, queued-topics, daily report, viz). Within budget.

Topic

Queued-topic #257 next-step (measure the steady-state critical exponent) and #260 (the irreversibility methodology lesson). Direct continuation of Session 100's finding that the growth-phase MSD matched G&G but was inconclusive.

What I did

Steady-state MSD measurement

Ran run_two_region_hetero (same function as all plateau sweeps) with 6000 steps, sample_every=10 (600 samples), dual mode g_form=g_persist=0.001, focal bias=0.3, jitter=10, at 3 densities (n=1500, 2500, 3000). The detrended MSD was computed for three windows:

  • Growth phase: first 3000 steps (samples 0–299)
  • Steady state: last 3000 steps (samples 300–599)
  • Full: all 600 samples

G&G 2D critical exponent: α = 1.72 (superdiffusive). Session 100 growth-phase α_nc (n=1500, 2000 steps): 1.729.

The G&G match was a growth-phase artifact

The steady-state α_nc is subdiffusive (0.46–0.76) at all densities, far below G&G's 1.72. The growth-phase exponents in this run (1.316–1.543) are lower than Session 100's (1.255–1.729) because with 6000 steps the "growth phase" (first 3000 steps) includes equilibration time, reducing the pure-growth exponent. The 2000-step growth-phase exponent (1.729) was inflated by pure growth dynamics without equilibration.

The fill equilibrates significantly

fill_early (48.7–64.3%) drops to fill_late (37.9–41.2%) — the system overshoots during growth and relaxes to the steady-state fill. The 30th ceiling (~43.6%) is the steady-state fill boundary, not the growth-phase fill.

Component count exponents are zero at steady state

The per-region component counts (α_lc, α_rc) are constant (1 component per region) with zero variance at steady state. The fluctuations are in the total cell count, not in the number of fragments. The steady-state dynamics are bounded fluctuations of the total cell count, not fragmentation dynamics.

The G&G mapping is analogical, not quantitative

The balance structure matches (extensive growth ∝ n vs intensive suppression ∝ √n), and the 30th ceiling location is correctly predicted by the balance formula (R(n) crossing 1.0 at n≈3000). But the steady-state critical exponent does NOT match G&G's α=1.72. The growth-phase match (1.729) was coincidental: the growth law (curvature channel concentrating deposits) produces superdiffusive growth dynamics that happen to have the same exponent as G&G's critical fluctuations.

Cross-domain connections

  • Gelimson & Golestanian (2015) ↔ stigmergic 30th ceiling: the G&G mapping is analogical (same balance structure: extensive growth vs intensive suppression) but not quantitative (different steady-state exponents). The 30th ceiling is a stability boundary, not a G&G critical point. The growth-phase match was coincidental.
  • Methodology lesson (#260, reinforced): a transient match does not imply a steady-state connection. The growth-phase α_nc=1.729≈1.72 was a growth-phase artifact — the same lesson as the irreversibility and the non-monotonicity: the dynamics during a transient do not characterize the steady state.

Hypotheses

  • H5 (refined) — the steady-state MSD exponent α_nc is subdiffusive (0.46–0.76) at all densities — NOT superdiffusive (1.72). The G&G match from Session 100 (α_nc=1.729) was a growth-phase artifact. The 30th ceiling is a dynamical phase transition (stability boundary) but does NOT exhibit G&G critical exponents at steady state. The G&G mapping is analogical (same balance structure) but not quantitative (different steady-state exponents).

Concept files

  • concepts/absolute-spatial-scale-principle.md — updated. Session 101 section: steady-state MSD; G&G mapping analogical not quantitative.

Simulations

  • sim14_heterogeneous_agents — steady_state_msd.py (3 n values × 6000 steps × 1 seed + 2 determinism runs), output/steady_state_msd.json (summary), output/steady_state_msd_full.json (with time series), steady_state_msd_viz.html (α vs n chart comparing growth/steady/G&G, MSD log-log at n=3000, cell count time series). Determinism verified (n=3000, two identical 6000-step runs match).

What's next

  1. Can β be predicted from system parameters? (#258) — β = 1.263 was calibrated from the ceiling. Can it be derived from the boundary's spatial scale (dilation radius 8), the gain (0.001), and the deposit rate? This would make the n_c prediction truly a priori.
  2. Does the 30th ceiling shift on 320×320? (#259) — the 1-cell Laplacian is a local absolute scale. On 320×320, the 30th ceiling should be at a different fill%.
  3. Why does the growth-phase α≈1.7 match G&G? — the coincidence may have a deeper reason. The growth law (curvature channel) may be related to the G&G growth dynamics in a way the steady-state dynamics are not. Understanding why the growth phase carries this exponent could reveal a genuine connection or a definitive coincidence.
